Rekey Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 25, 2026
Rekey is a keyboard layout switcher for macOS. It fixes words typed in the wrong keyboard layout (for example, ghbdtn → привет) in English, Russian, German, French, Spanish and Italian. This policy explains what Rekey can see and what it does with it.
The short version
Rekey does not collect, store, or send any data. What you type never leaves your Mac. Rekey has no network access at all: the app is sandboxed and is not granted the network entitlement, so it physically cannot send anything over the internet.
What Rekey sees and why
- Key presses (Input Monitoring permission). Rekey looks at the keys you press to notice a word typed in the wrong layout. It keeps only the last few words, in memory, so that it can also fix a short word together with the next one (
z htibk→я решил). They are forgotten when you press Enter, click, switch apps or pause Rekey. Nothing is written to disk, logged, or sent anywhere. - Typing the correction (Accessibility permission). Rekey types the corrected word for you and switches the keyboard layout.
- Selected text. When you press Shift twice with text selected, Rekey copies the selection, converts it, and pastes it back. Your previous clipboard contents are restored right after the paste. Converted text is marked as transient so clipboard managers do not save it.
Passwords and sensitive input
- In password fields macOS turns on Secure Input and hides typing from all apps, including Rekey. Rekey respects this and never tries to work around it.
- Rekey is completely off in password managers (1Password, Bitwarden, KeePassXC, LastPass, Passwords, Keychain Access) by default. You can exclude any other app.
- Words that look like passwords – mixed case (like
GhbDtn) or digits – are not corrected. The only exceptions are a number followed by a unit (8еи→8TB) and digits that are letters in the other layout (the top row of the French keyboard). - You can pause Rekey from the menu bar at any time.
What is stored on your Mac
Only Rekey’s own settings: whether auto-correct is on, pause, the list of excluded apps, and launch at login. They stay in Rekey’s sandbox container on your Mac.
Diagnostics
Rekey writes technical events to the macOS system log (for example, “replaced 7 characters”): only counts, lengths and states, never the text itself. “Copy Diagnostics” in the menu copies such technical information to your clipboard so you can send it to support if you choose to. Rekey never sends it by itself.
Third parties
Rekey contains no analytics, advertising, or third-party SDKs. Crash reports, if you have enabled sharing with developers in macOS settings, are delivered by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy.
